Title: "The Heavenly Morgan Twins"
Poetry or Literary Inclusion: "Poor little rich girl, You’re a bewitched girl Better beware! ..... In lives of leisure, The craze for pleasure, steadily grows. Cocktails and laughter, But what comes after? Nobody knows." Noel Coward - “Poor Little Rich Girl” from Charlot’s Revue of 1926 Sub Text: The heavenly Morgan Twins, Thelma (Tell-ma) and Gloria, in a moment of sublime repose as they sat for Mr. Beaton’s camera. He often likened them to a pair of fragrant white magnolia blossoms or even a novel by Ouida. Were they poor little rich girls or just the reverse, rich girls who were just a bit poor? Throughout life the little princesses were surrounded by a host of fashion faeries, often confusing them with the constellation of saints to whom they dutifully prayed. Both married royalty of sorts. Thelma, on the second try in 1926, became Viscountess Furness, wife of Marmaduke Furness - 1st Viscount Furness. During a bit of infidelity to “Duke”, Thelma had a go at Edward, VIII but vague dreams of a crown and the excitement of the royal, social whirl ended when she made the mistake of introducing her friend Mrs. Simpson to the other Duke-to-be, Edward. Gloria’s royal, American wedding took place in 1923 when exchanging vows with Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt, for better or worse, she joined the house of Vanderbilt. She became a Viscountess in her own right. The stork paid a visit to the couple in February of 1924 delivering the second Gloria, this one a Vanderbilt by birth. Every fairy tale requires some darkness and much in this story was supplied by Mama Morgan and Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. Each a mistress at manipulation, the first gained money through power the second power through wealth.
